We've written about Virginia to Vegas before—aka Derik Baker, this American-born Canadian singer-songwriter is an independent artist with a clear vision of what he wants: in terms of sound, visuals, and emotion. "it’s a little complicated, but i’m okay." is his new 3-song EP that was made remotely from ideas that Baker had started at home, or in hotel rooms, or even many years ago. His usual collaborators–Geoff Warburton and Mike Wise–returned to play their part along with a few new writers that Baker worked with via voice notes.
Baker is signed to Wax Records, and along with working on his own music he lends his talent as co-writer for artists like DVBBS and Delaney Jane. He is known for his infectious vocals and pop-friendly production techniques, with a knack for writing big, dynamic choruses and heartfelt lyrics. "no excuses" falls right in his sweet spot as an emotionally resonant yet upbeat exploration of a complicated would-be romance, with a driving, dance-friendly drum mix and plenty of melodic hooks.
"no excuses" encompasses that feeling of being in love with one of your best friends. You finally tell yourself that you're not going to continue making excuses as to why you should express how you feel, and take that leap of faith. — Virginia To Vegas
Baker has shared the stage with a wide range of artists that includes Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, Bryce Vine, Maroon 5, Fifth Harmony, Alessia Cara, Pitbull, Imagine Dragons and Marianas Trench.
