Los Angeles-based The Active Set is the brainchild of frontman Matthew Stolarz. This is my favorite kind of music to write about, because it feels so relevant to the current moment. At the same time that The Active Set is combining vintage post-punk and new wave, along with a modern sensibility that channels energetic, melody-driven vibes and a straight-ahead drum groove, I also hear a reference to the innovative work of The Talking Heads. "Death Of A Friend" also taps into the morbid reality of post-Covid society, as death has been especially raw and present for the members of The Active Set over the last several years. The loss of parents, friends, and associates is so ubiquitous that it borders on the absurd. "Death Of A Friend" explorers that difficult reality, with a tone that mixes sarcasm with a veiled call for help.
Guitars and a sticky bass line lead the charge, as the lyrics come to terms directly with a new future that is more deadly and volatile than it ever was before. We should not be surprised that young, ambitious bands are willing to wrestle with the uncertainty of a world that is post-Covid, and an economy that is in free fall. In times of chaos, let the truth-tellers make art of the madness.
