Swimming Pool - Sunday

Swimming Pool is the collaborative project of Klyl Shifroni and Seraina Fässler, a duo that splits time between The Hague and Zürich. They met while studying together at the Institute of Sonology, and quickly bonded over their shared passions for digital synthesis and the intersection between mathematics, logic, and musical composition. Together, they seek to join the forces of experimental electronics with an emotionally-direct approach to songwriting.

Sunday
I’ll be waiting in the rain
Sunday
Look for clovers in the rain
Drop my penny in the drain...

"Sunday" was written as a way of gently poking fun at the quiet absurdity of rituals: reducing the act of wishing on a star, or rubbing a lucky coin, to a meaningless act of ornamentation. This enigmatic track calls the bluff of anyone who pretends these rites have any true significance, while laying out a series of musical textures that overlap in interesting ways. Born out of late-night DJ sets in abandoned garages, Swimming Pool's sound has grown from a layered process that is shaped by bowed bass, processed vocals, and cryptic sampling techniques. "Sunday" is a worthy example of this, mixing the disarticulated sound of a bowed bass in a circular loop with Fässler's haunting vocal presence, as the stripped-down dynamics of the production as a whole allow for the long arc of each figure to flower independently. The result is a unique and brooding work that borrows as much from Morphine as it does Bob Moses.
