muuju is the solo project for Berlin-based electronic producer Andreas Schütz, who is also known for his contributions as one half of the duo il:lo. With muuju, Andreas moves into a more open and fluid landscape, with an intimacy that is guided more by feeling than by form. The sound benefits from a groove-based architecture that fits somewhere between downtempo and chillwave. With a drum feel that stays close to physical performance, the layers of overdubbing feel more organic because they are tied to something real.
One thing that emerges for me is that muuju is a master of dynamics, with really colorful interludes that work together to create a sense of variation over the main drum figure. Latest single "zest" paints a dreamy picture of rolling sand dunes under a healing desert wind, with a solid drum groove underpinning countermelodies from both the piano and electric guitar.
Later this year, muuju will release his debut EP bedforms on the indie label Future Archive Recordings.
