Mikey Demilio - Blue Ferrari

Mikey Demilio has one of those voices that you really can't forget. I think the last time I heard a voice this unique was probably G Love, with a similarly throat-throttled head voice. Some people got a larynx that's built different.

But instead of channeling guitar-based Roots-Funk, Mikey Demilio is after something else entirely. His sound, to me, leans more heavily on the band dynamic, as well as a varying production aesthetic that ranges from noise rock all the way to proto punk. You really don't know what you're getting all the time. Every song is its own surprise. With a vocal presence that splits the difference between Isaac Brock and Kermit the Frog, Mikey Demilio owns a space in the alt rock landscape that is as unique as it is hard to emulate. I'm not seeing an obvious pattern here. I absolutely love the fact that there is really no way to predict what his next song will sound like.

"Blue Ferrari" is a song that feels universal, in terms of a rock band signature. You have your chunky guitar strum, a straight ahead 2/4 groove with a small nod to the fragmented clave, and a big wall of countermelody from the assorted accompaniment. For an artist with so much range, I like "Blue Ferrari" as a lead single.

"Blue Ferrari" is exactly what it sounds like: a slick, neon pop engine that goes by in a flash.
