With fiery vocals and a singalong chorus, Toronto-based LU KALA drops "Body Knew," the second single of her career. She continues to pave the way for female empowerment with a bold, fresh sound and a unique musical aesthetic.
Just like the rest of us, LU KALA suffers from heartbreak and disconnected love. On her new track, she explores a personal sense of loss as she wishes aloud that she could move on. LU KALA immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of three from The Democratic Republic of the Congo. Gifted with a talent for memorable hooks and smooth melody, KALA co-wrote a track that landed on R&B star Jennifer Hudson's 2014 studio album, JHUD. This showcase of her deep instinct for pop songwriting launched her career as a vocalist, with undercurrents of raw intensity and the ability to lean into rock, soul and pop without epitomizing any particular genre. Unwilling to vocally bend into the box that black female performers are often expected to exist in, KALA has embraced her distinctive sound, transforming her trajectory as an artist, and a woman, in the process: "Everything about me says, 'Nah, I'm going to be in any space I choose to be in. And I'm going to command it.'"
"Body Knew" is a bouncy pop vibe that underscores the importance of trusting your instincts. LU KALA's rebellious look and uncompromising personality is redefining what it means to be a pop star, one infectious track at a time.
