Kylie Rothfield is an artist that I was just introduced to a few months ago. She's back with a new single "Old Man." Last time we discussed her single "Never Loved Somebody," we learned about her early career, and her contact with Alicia Keys and season 11 of The Voice. More recently, she has had some luck with song placements for TV, and other large projects. "Old Man" is accompanied by a music video created by Juice Box Films, an award-winning, women-owned production company whose latest short–executive produced by Jason Reitman–is set to show at Sundance 2025.
“Old Man” explores the possibly non-fictional experience of a young woman pairing up with an older man, and the emotional landscape that ensues, along with the eventual realization that perhaps the motivations are not as pure as one would like. With hints of piano & analog synth, big electric guitars, and a slight mid-tempo swing, this edgy track was co-written/produced by female artist Kylie Rothfield & queer indie alt-pop icon Mothé. The music video takes place in a hospital, with Kylie playing nurse to her old self. In a way, it is the perfect juxtaposition of self-advocacy against a backdrop of moody determinism, echoing the sentiment that some dreams are better left unfulfilled.
I applaud the production team here for not taking an obvious path: the music video for "Old Man" is surprising, and compelling, while being, somehow, both brooding and playful. It's a fantastic performance and a fun song that illuminates an aspect of life that perhaps doesn't get much attention.
At 3 weeks old, the music video for "Old Man" has already hit a quarter of a million streams. The future burns bright for this young songstress from Danville.
