Signed to German independent label Springstoff, Jamila & The Other Heroes are the rare form of psychedelic desert funk band that comes with a political agenda. Born in service to the causes of emancipation and empowerment, the band's medium is psychedelic rock with elements of funk and Arab folklore. Along with African and Latin American influences, the many members of this band bring their personal cultural affinities to bear, resulting in a spicy melting pot of musical traditions.

"LAYLA ليلى ", meaning "night" in Arabic, captures the sleepless nights of anxiety, powerlessness, and at the same time togetherness & solidarity in the face of the Gaza genocide.

The seed of this song was written in the spring of 2023, in Amman, Jordan. After losing her uncle Samir, this was the melody Jamila heard that brought her comfort. Months later, it resurfaced again – in Ramallah.

For us music is not free of politics! Given that in particular women of color are underrepresented in the music industry, we want to set an example for emancipation and empowerment. This is why we turn into heroes and are determined to advocate in our lyrics and sounds for a more just and fair society.

EDITOR's note:

I think the most important thing to keep in mind about a song like this, is that it helps us remember what is important. It puts a spotlight on an issue that is not getting enough attention, which is simply that there is an entire generation of residents in Gaza, now, who have known nothing but terror and destruction for almost a year and a half. As much as their opponents want to erase them from the Earth, the way we support them and help them flourish is with this kind of energy. This is a celebration of Gazan identity.
