We've written about Harry Nathan before (here and here) — in the last year or two, he's made a name for himself as a goto indie artist in the electronic space, with expertise ranging from lofi house, to disco, and 'bohemian dream pop.' Harry got his start as a DJ in Australia, and his tracks all share a certain party vibe, with a bit of raw emotion and slight nostalgia just beneath the surface. His weakness for classic synthesizers and analog drum machines only adds to this sense of period mystique.
His latest single is lifted from upcoming EP "Songs About Falling," a second preview from that project which will be out later this year via Majestic Casual Records. "Last Call" features a combination of analog beats and swirling electronica, as Nathan draws inspiration from Todd Terje, Client Liaison, and Touch Sensitive. This introspective track was written from the perspective of a close friend who was navigating a difficult breakup. With a voice and melody that makes widespread use of digital effects and vocoder, fused with a throwback, slow disco sensibility, the result is an experience of timelessness, as Nathan pushes 80's pop into a modern context that is informed by house, shoegaze, and synthwave.
I wrote this song from the perspective of one of my best friends, who was going through a tricky break up. Matters of the heart are never easy, we’ve all been in that situation where a once loving relationship nears its fatal end. We scramble for clarity in the abyss as our world shifts into the emotional unknown. — Harry Nathan
