Estella Dawn - Reckless

We've written about Estella Dawn before (here and here). In this modern world of audio streaming, you really need to be releasing a new single every month or two. She does a great job of keeping that constant flow of new singles going.

Estella was born in New Zealand, but has since settled down in sunny San Diego. Her songs tend to fall somewhere in the landscape of indie pop, while latest single "Reckless" feels firmly rooted in elements of soul as well. Her vocal performance here is truly superlative, pulling together all of the elements I love about soul music in the pop landscape: a direct conduit to authentic emotion, and a narrative that feels a bit hidden, but also full of pain. We emote with her, but also through her – as the details of this relationship gone wrong resonate with elements of our own past. Some of the rapid fire delivery here touches on hip-hop as well, which is no surprise for this genre-fluid singer who writes, records, and produces every track herself.

Yes I abandoned you at your darkest hour
But you drove reckless
with me in the front seat of your car
And I just, couldn’t look you in the face
without feeling betrayed so
If you’re scarred by the parting
I think it’s even babe

"Reckless" represents another step forward for Estella Dawn, who has written a worthy anthem to that difficult search for a life partner. This song hits hard, and pulls no punches. It's hard out there for a lonely heart.
