David Wimbish has one of those voices that you don't forget once you've heard it. He achieves a sense of expression and emotional gravitas that I just personally find to be exceptional. You get the occasional falsetto lift, a sort of halting, uneven vibrato, & some underlying rock chords, and somehow it all comes together in a way just feels naturally bittersweet. But in this case, it truly is. To wit:
Love Me More is an accidental prophecy - a song born of deep-seated fear that my depression handicaps my end of romantic mutuality, and eventually erodes my partner’s energy for me. And it did. A few short weeks after writing Love Me More, the relationship it grasped for ended. That ending, however, confirmed the suspicions echoed in this song: maybe my mental health struggles wear on the relationship less because of how I show up for my partner, and more because of how poorly I show up for myself. Love Me More is a vulnerable challenge to love myself better, and thus the people that care for me.
So it's a life lesson, wrapped in an old cry for help that didn't work out as planned. Sounds just like the life of an artist to me.
We've written about The Collection before, back in 2018 before they became David Wimbish & The Collection. I was glad to hear from them again, now that they've been signed to Nettwerk records. This Saxapahaw, NC-based band places just as much emphasis on interpersonal community and relationships as it does on the music itself. It's a vibe. Just this past January, DWTC released their boldest EP, "How to Survive an Ending." You should listen to it. "Love Me More" is their latest single, and it's been getting a lot of spins around here lately.
