clear eyes is the passion project of producer Jeremy Lloyd, also know as the non-vocal half of Marian Hill. His latest single, "no place i'd rather be" features Reo Cragun on vocals and finds Lloyd diving further into the deep end with his love of electronic layering and shifting, unpredictable beats. The 'clear eyes' project is a way for him to tap into a different mood and craft modern, innovative music with beauty as its first priority.
With Cragun's liquid falsetto adding a sense of simple bliss an evolving contrast emerges between the stuttered breaks and the languid groove, providing a complex dynamism and a sense of mystery. As the song progresses we take note of another thematic contradiction: lyrics that shimmer with a brooding, inner disaffect are presented in waves of melodic rapture, blurring the lines between pleasure and pain. As the energetic counterpoint between vocals and rhythm builds to a climax, we are left with the realization that love is the only source of truth in a world that is always changing.
I don't know how to solve my problems
Barely even know who I wanna be
Everybody thinks I've got it all
I just took a flight to Melbourne
This hotel's too posh for me
Thirty four floors would be quite the fall
Will it be waiting when I get home?
You're the only one I need
There ain't no place I'd rather be, be
Our connection is so strong
You're playing this song on repeat
There ain't no place I'd rather be
I love the idea that I can have a session with any artist, from any genre, and come away with a song that feels like them and also feels like me. It’s about the balance of creating a unique sonic world where there’s still room for everyone. — clear eyes
