chuong is a Vietnamese-Canadian artist with a unique style, a nature-core inspired sound he calls soft hyperpop. The production aesthetic combines an electronic, re-sampled sound with undertones of folk and glitchy pop. His recent single is called "the sun is calling me back," representing the first track of a project funded by Canada Council. His past lives include a secretive meme-rap persona, an internship at an LA K-R&B label, and now co-founder of the Montreal-based Bahay Collective.
There is a duality of understatement and emotional projection here that mixes vocal sound effects with a compressed acoustic guitar and a surprising range of electronic beats. I think that's what I love most about this song: a dynamic arc that starts a little bit Iron & Wine, and finishes somewhere else entirely. At the core of chuong's music is a sense of hip-hop derived rhythm, a lack of pretense, and a passion for genre crossover. Featured on his 2025 release "water," this track feels both nostalgic and resolute, as we trust in the cycles of day and night to lead the way forward.
I took the call and it brought me back
Hopped on the plane won’t be looking back
Hope it saves me from a heart attack
Cause lately I been slipping through the cracks
