I've been spinning this new release for a few months now over at KSKQ. It's amazing stuff. Which is why Boy Golden was picked for the 2025 Artist Award.
Boy Golden, who is known as Liam Duncan IRL, is an alternative country singer-songwriter based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was briefly a member of indie rock band The Middle Coast. Newest release "Best of Our Possible Lives" offers a beautiful example of how well great songwriting can generate crossover appeal. Along with a persona that is decidedly Country, and a musical sensibility that touches on Art Rock, we get a quirky pop appeal that feels both unforced and unexpected.
My first experience with Boy Golden's music was the first single release, "Suffer," which reached #1 on the Folk charts in Canada last year. I was quickly engaged by great lyrics, an interesting perspective, and an ear for great hooks. I also found the production style to be very close to my own favorite aesthetic: clean sounds, a minimum of reverb, and a focus on the performance. Great music is like great cooking. You just let the ingredients speak for themselves.
Prices go up and they don't come down
Cost 40 bucks just to hang around
I know people sleeping on the ground
Prices go up and they don't come down
I wanna know where my money went
I want a new fucking president
I wanna believe that God is benevolent
I wanna know where my money went
I will continue to spin tracks from this album on my show for KSKQ and I look forward to whatever comes next for this promising artist.
