Steve Jobs handpicked a song by Yael Naïm - "New Soul" - to launch Apple's MacBook Air in 2007. She soon became the first Israeli solo artist to earn a Top 10 hit in the US. Now, she counts Sam Smith among her fans.
"Shine" is a hauntingly gorgeous example of Yael Naïm's impressive range as a vocalist, as her dynamic performance builds from whisper to angelic cry, supported by a sparse orchestration of ambient, electric tones. An ethereal video, choreographed by renowned acrobat Yoann Bourgeois, with the help of Moses Sumney's director of photography Martim Vian, delivers images of Naïm in a tenebrous purgatory of elegant slow-motion. Naïm's languid physicality seems to echo the syrupy essence of her melodic affect, as we are mesmerized by her gracious sound and form. "Shine" is an advance single from her album "NightSongs," out later this month, and only serves to reinforce her well-earned reputation as a guru of classical-infused chamber pop.
This song is featured on our Rainy Day playlist.
