The voice here combines the angelic precision of Jeff Buckley with a shade of Trent Reznor. By adding the undulating electronic groove, and the complex dynamics between live drums and sequencing, we are treated to an epic and emotional ride. From sweet croon, to trip-hop, to indie-rock, SYML blends elements like a chef uses spice, never too much; and only for flavor.

What emerges from this haunting stew of clean electric guitar, soaring vocal, and heartbeat pulse is a modern and uniquely impassioned evolution from simple melody, to electronic groove, and back again. Clearly this is a sound that will resonate with SYML’s millions of fans. The lead vocal performance is stunning, and the musical journey from this song is everything.

Covered in dust, the wings of my porcelain dove
They don’t trouble the waters, my love

The Bird, the latest from Nettwerk Records artist SYML, is a shimmering look into the mind of this west-coast musical polymath.

From his basement recording studio in the small town of Issaquah, Brian Fennell wrote and recorded a collection of songs under the name Syml, which means simple in Welsh. Adopted and not knowing his history or connection to his Welsh roots, many of these songs were influenced by the complex feelings that come from unknown lineage. This song is featured on our CHILL Angeles playlist.
