Reluctant Ingenue. - Samia: 21 (Music Video)

Sometimes you come out of the gate sitting on top of your game. Liz Phair was 26 for her release of Exile in Guyville, and Sheryl Crow was 31 when she found success with Tuesday Night Music Club. Samia, as she proudly reveals her own coming of age with her single 21, has access to a pre-adult, post-adolescent cosmic wisdom. The insight is real, nuanced, and existential in the two-fisted sense of both expressing and normalizing the anguish of personal responsibility.
And while the soul of the production is a simple fist-pumping rock affair, the video is fittingly gritty, artsy, and intellectual. If this is the sound of Samia coming to terms with adulthood, we think it could easily be the blueprint for an entire generation of whip-smart reluctant ingenues to do the same.
