Los Angeles based, Dorchester-raised songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Khamari is back with a new song "Doctor, My Eyes." This dynamic and complex ballad finds Khamari channeling his inner Stevie Wonder, as he yet again masterfully combines contemporary R&B and electronic pop to yield a unique document of personal experience and heartfelt reflection. Here, he mixes influences from a classic of 70s-era roots pop with a more modern exemplar ("Mexico" by Incubus) and an homage to the wise words of his grandfather.
When I wrote [Doctor, My Eyes] I had moved from Boston to LA and was trying to make sense of my life. A lot of things were shifting too fast to keep up with, but things I hoped would change stayed the same. I got put on to this Jackson Browne record, and the story resonated with me. That’s where I got the title. It’s about him being desperate to make any sense of his life and experiences. Then a friend played me Incubus, the song 'Mexico'. I knew I wanted to lay out these thoughts over a guitar that intimate. In the outtro my grandfather is the voice that gives me advice because he’s always been an anchor for me. — Khamari
The simple acoustic guitar lays a fitting groundwork for the mercurial layers of vocal harmony and orchestral strings, as Khamari mulls over the events of a year in flux from a perspective that is grounded in memory, a search for meaning, and his own visceral reaction to the enigmatic social apparatus that is Los Angeles.
With a lush production aesthetic that is both rhythmic and ethereal, this Berklee School of Music dropout has crafted a soul-tinged gem of electronic chamber pop that chronicles the weight of feeling too much and losing self-awareness. By taking listeners on a journey through his inner struggles, Khamari helps us all find a piece of ourselves in this outpouring of restless emotion and raw vulnerability. On the bad days, when nothing makes sense, music is the thing that can pull us through: with a gorgeous bit of melody and words that come straight from the heart.
Staring at the writing on the wall
Is there some typе of pill I could take
That would make it all go away?
Doctor, would you give mе something?
Would you, would you
Doc, I'm only 20 something
Would you, would you?
I'm way too young to feel this numb
Would you, would you?
With over 4 million cumulative streams in his first 3 songs - including 500k in The Heat's first week on Spotify alone - Khamari's first chapter is off to a powerful start.
