Katie Tupper is a roots and soul inspired songwriter from the river city of Saskatoon who is blissfully lost among the infinite prairies, vibrant arts community, and clear blue skies in the heart of Canada's Saskatchewan province. Her smokey vocal timbre features beautifully against the delicate piano, nylon string guitar, and jazzy drums of her latest single "How Can I Get Your Love?"
Katie wrote this intimate acoustic beckoner as a an exploration of 'all the possible partners we miss out on from sheer cluelessness,' as she devastatingly digs right into wounds that never truly heal. Her EP "Towards The End" is a delicious collection of songs showcasing her instantly recognizable vocal presence and a production aesthetic that echoes as much from soul legends like Marvin Gaye and Mavis Staples as it does from a modern chanteuse like Amber Mark.
Her new EP "Towards the End" — co-produced by Connor Seidel (Charlotte Cardin, Matt Holubowski) — is an ode to love, identity and the inextricable ways the two entwine. Keep an eye on this promising young singer who is set to drop her sultry and luminescent debut on Toronto-based Arts & Crafts Productions (A&C), home to fellow roots pioneers Andy Shauf and Frazey Ford, gloom rockers Rey Pila, and British folk phenom Lucy Rose among many others.
I grew up in fields of butter
Wore my brown hair to my knees
All my friends could've been lovers
If they'd asked nicely
In summer, skies were smokey
Unless they chose to be clear
I remember why I left things
But now I'm not sure
It’s about coming back to your hometown and wanting things to be exactly as you left them, and the desperation for those memories once you realize that is not true. I wrote about moments in previous relationships where you fully lay yourself out on the line, almost to a desperate extent because you feel you need to. It feels like vulnerability and bravery in confessing an old love but it really is more of seeking comfort in the familiar and begging those around you to create that for you. — Katie Tupper
