Philadelphia Songwriter Contemplates the Complicated Dynamic Between Past and Future. - Geron Hoy: Hold Steady

Delivers just the right mix of folk roots, pop-friendly embellishment, and genuine emotion to create an anthem to the type of lonely optimism that leads a creative heart from one day to the next.

Philadelphia-based singer and songwriter Geron Hoy just released another single from his latest EP project. "Hold Steady" was mixed by Grammy Award winner Jon Kaplan (Allen Stone, Black Pumas, Blind Pilot) and self-produced along with co-production efforts by Jon & Eric Sanderson. Eric also lent a hand on bass, sequencing, guitar, and keyboards on many of the tracks. Formally of the band Augustines, Eric brought Geron to record at the world-renowned Tarquin Studios which is owned by Peter Katis (also a Grammy winner).

This dreamy mid-tempo ballad features Geron's plaintive vocal style served over a smooth bed of acoustic guitar, lap steel, and piano, as he contemplates the complicated dynamic between past and future — and how the only power we truly have is in the moment. The decision between what to let go of and what to hold on to becomes our destiny and Geron ponders that fact with lyrics that explore the common ground between soft melancholy and enduring personal strength. Released by American Highways, this wistful burner reminds me just a bit of a mix between the troubadour-poet stylings of Josh Ritter and the gritty, wash-out melodies of Hollow Coves. "Hold Steady" delivers just the right mix of folk roots, pop-friendly embellishment, and genuine emotion to create an anthem to the type of lonely optimism that leads a creative heart from one day to the next.

I'll carry on living how I wanna live
I'll carry on living how I wanna live
Let my heart decide
Trying to find some peace of mind

When the runner runs with the greatest luck
While you're still trying to get unstuck
Hold steady
Hold steady
