firekid, the experimental project from Alabama-based Dillon Hodges and Heidi Feek, travelled to Nashville to write and record their new song "Good and Greasy"—fulfilling a longtime dream for the duo. This funky roots-driven track will be featured on firekid's upcoming album, produced by Jay Joyce, which comes out on Dec. 10, 2022.
Perhaps inspired by the Woody Guthrie classic "Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy," this amalgam of folk sensibilities and modern electronic pop mojo puts Hodges' skill as a flatpicker on full display while poking fun at the intersection between music, art, and food. Recorded live in their kitchen with Hodges on guitar and Feek tripping off samples with a Critter & Guitari looper, the 'greasy spoon' fare becomes part of the performance as pancakes, bacon, eggs and bananas are used to trigger beats and ambient flourishes. By mixing elements of bluegrass, pop and hip hop, this innovative duo gives us a taste of their creative journey to date as they prepare to release an album that was 6 years in the making.
For inspiration, we often find ourselves outside. We live on 3.5 acres of Oak, Dogwood and Maple trees in northern Alabama. It only took us 6 years to finish a record, most of the time spent wandering aimlessly around our property. — Heidi Feek

Dillon Hodges won the National Flatpicking Championship at the age of 17—the the second-youngest person ever to do so. Feek watched her father, Rory, performing traditional folk songs for fans across the country and developed her own passion for the genre. Beginning as a solo project from Hodges, firekid has evolved into a collaborative creative outlet that combines their individual influences and passions while bending genre lines to their precipitous will.
