Ellisa Sun - Talk to Ya

A marching song for the class of lovers that will never suffer anything less than they deserve.

I love this kind of songwriting, it feels to me like the opposite of cookie-cutter. The character of this song owes itself to the unique moment in time that was experienced, so it feels human in that way. Coupled with a really nice job on the production side: both in terms of the programmed beats and the sizzling synth bass, it comes together as a powerhouse example of a signature funky, sassy-pop sound, which has been paying the bills now for a minute (this song was featured in the Hulu series Dollface, with Kat Dennings and Brenda Song).

But beyond the trappings of current-moment success, this song feels sort of pegged to the backdrop of universal truth, just by virtue of the super-relatable chorus premise.

I can't talk to you
Talk to you like this
You're the one pulling the trigger

This is the calling card of someone escaping from a relationship marked by narcissism. Those who know, will know. That's what makes this song successful in my view. On the one hand, it's just a banging dance floor classic with a nice groove, and on the other hand, it's a marching song for the class of lovers that will never suffer anything less than they deserve.
