Bakénéko releases their second song, "Stay," a dense and rhythmic arrangement of radioactive J-Pop. By day, Brandon and Mai work in audio production for film and television - Brandon as a composer and producer, and Mai as a songwriter, voice actor, and sound designer.
Their work is featured on series offerings from Netflix, E! Network, Facebook Watch, and Amazon Prime TV, in addition to upcoming, as-yet-unannounced projects for AppleTV+. "Stay" explores the complicated dynamics of a possessive ex-girlfriend who attempts to coerce her former lover back into a relationship through surveillance and harassment. The lyrics reveal a dark backstory under the hypnotic and joyful veil of J-Pop idols such as Perfume and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. A bilingual Japanese/English style engages the listener, as "Stay" exposes the double standard and gender-bias that surrounds modern images of 'unhealthy attachment.' Too often, this kind of obsessive behavior from a woman is called crazy, at the same time that men are defended as just being 'committed to love.' With the release of this edgy and futuristic track, Bakénéko reveals a fresh neon and glitchy anime aesthetic to personify the legend of their namesake, inspired by games like Doki Doki Literature Club.
This song is featured on our Groovy Summer playlist.
