German ambient artist AK uses his everyday life experiences and the feelings they create to compose heartfelt electronic music. "Floating Into Space" is about the euphoric emotions that came over him once spring started transitioning into summer. With this spacious and rhythmic track, AK explores a cozy moment of laying on a picnic blanket in a public park — eyes closed — as he enjoys the warm sun on his skin.
Combining arpeggiated synthesizers with Balearic elements of groove, AK delivers a melodic experience of pure introspection and mindful appreciation. "Floating Into Space" celebrates the little moments of joy that make life worth living.
CHILLFILTR® had the opportunity to ask AK a few questions about his art. Read on for short Q & A session with AK, his process, and what inspires him.
What does the songwriting process look like for you?
I usually either have a concept in mind, or I just try to experiment. When it's the latter, I try to come up with a melodic idea or texture that I really enjoy, and then start building a song on it.
Do you have a process for selecting the right samples for a given rhythm?
I like to look for samples that naturally fit into the songs I'm working on, because I feel like sometimes drum one shots that don't really fit are hard to mangle into place.
Who would you list as your top 2 or 3 artists to pull inspiration from?
I've really been enjoying CloudNone's new EP. I've also found Sublab's music very inspiring lately.
What drew you to music? Was there a moment you can describe where you knew music was the thing?
I had a natural interest in music as a kid, so I started taking lessons for a lot of different instruments. But I never had the perseverance to actually stick with them, sadly. At some point somebody passed around a hard drive full of electronic music in my year group (when I was about 14), and I got fascinated by the music, because it was so different from what I had heard before. That's what inspired me to start making my own electronic music.
