With a surprisingly natural lyricism and a sisters’ harmony in the vein of the Dixie Chicks and First Aid Kit, The Burney Sisters give us a brazen vocal delivery and a satisfying hook, backed by a roots rhythm section along with some banjo and acoustic guitar.
It progresses from a ballad about simple attraction to something a bit more haunted, and complicated, yet never strays from a very grounded point-of-view. The quality of the vocal harmony is central to the success of this very sparse production, and bodes well for what will certainly be a long and lively career for these two young talents. Sometimes memorable songwriting and two fantastic co-lead vocals is all you need to make a great single.
Indie-folk-pop siblings Emma and Olivia Burney, The Burney Sisters, are based in St. Louis. Catch them live this weekend at the Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival in Columbia, MO. This song is featured on our Country - Americana playlist.
