Paul De Leon - Kings

Paul De Leon - Kings

Paul De Leon blends elements of rock, folk, and pop, in the style of artists like John Mayer and Dave Matthews, but with a nod to some more synth-heavy sounds like The 1975. I find the melody here to have some nice movement, and with the fast pulse, the dynamics of the arrangement work flawlessly to create contrast between kick-and-snare-heavy elevation and the low purr of a synth patch.

The sense of purpose comes from the open exploration of a difficult past, with some lessons learned and a lasting bond:

Please don’t go
won’t make it on my own
make it on my own
We are strong
won’t let them take our home
— Paul De Leon

The folky affect of the verse, combined with the steady kick drum, sets up a wonderful delivery of the self-affirming message from the chorus: that we can make our home whatever we want it to be.
